Marvel Universe Wave 20 Blastaar Variant Review

Marvel Universe Wave 20 Blastaar Variant Review

Jay Cochran - December 10, 2012

Hasbro gives us another villain to add to the ranks with the wave 20 Blastaar figure. Two different versions of this figure were released, a regular version and a translucent hands variant to mimic his blasting effect. Today, we are taking a look at the variant to see if it’s a figure worth adding to your collection.

You can check out hi-res images for this figure in our GALLERY below.

Packaging - The card back is similar to previous Marvel Universe offerings. Art work featuring the character is in the top left side of the cardback. The art work for this wave was done by comic book artist Mike Deodato Jr. In the bottom left corner, the little cardboard “Comic Shot” is displayed next to the titled figure.

The back features a picture of the figure with a brief bio and images of the other two figures offered in this wave, Jubilee and Professor Xavier. An image of a 70’s version of Dazzler is shown on the bottom of the card backs in this wave. Each wave appears to feature a different character with little sayings. Dazzler says for this figure “Can ya dig it?”

Sculpt - The sculpting on this figure is nice and pretty detailed. The hair on the figure’s head and face is nicely sculpted, and the expression gives the appearance of a foe you don’t want to mess with.

The figure uses the same bigger body mold as Thanos, Juggernaut, Classic Hulk, Apocalypse, and Skaar. Though Blastaar’s costume is a pretty simple design, the collar of the outfit helps portray the large size of this character.

Paint - The paint on this figure is pretty basic. Not a lot of washes other than the hair on the head, using mostly a basic grey for the skin and a blue almost metallic coat on the costume. For this variant, the hands sport a clear orange transparent paint to replicate his blasting powers and his eyes are orange also to mimic his power.

Articulation - Blastaar has a fair amount of articulation for a large figure. He has Ball Head on Hinge neck however because of the hair his up and down movement is pretty limited. Swivel-Hinged Shoulders, Swivel Wrists, Hinge Elbows, Bicep Swivel, Ball-Jointed Hips, Thigh Cuts, Double-Hinged Knees, Boot-Top Swivels and Hinges Ankles.

Accessories - Blastaar has no accessories.

Fun - Blastaar is a cool-looking villain, but not one that has been overly used in the comics. Known mainly as a Fantastic Four villain, he has also appeared in some of the cosmic titles in recent years. I like the variant version over the regular one. The translucent effect makes him more menacing looking and, in my opinion, looks better in battle poses.

Overall - Villains are always good, and this one is well-sculpted with good articulation. He may not be a super-familiar character to some but even if you don’t know much about him, I think you will be able to find ways to pit him against many of the teams in the Marvel Universe. Fitting in more obscure characters from time to time is nice too. If you want to increase your Marvel rogue gallery, then I think Blastaar will make a nice addition.
