A New Diamond Select Toys Miscellaneous Q&A

Jay Cochran - September 27, 2010
DSTChuck has released a new Diamond Select Toys Q&A over on their Art Asylum website for your viewing pleasure.

In this weeks edition focuses Miscellaneous questions. Check out the entire Q&A below:

Leondeluz
hi, are you aware that your most successful sales by marvel select line, are the big guys, because the great majority of collector are looking to complete the existing collections, so the watcher, red hulk, juggernaut, the thing, etc, are great to our marvel legends slots in blank, but the medium size like Deadpool, Cyclops and other are a a great problem to fit in, so my question is why don’t focus on heroes of bigger size than normal, like colossus, sentry, Drax the destroyer, blaastar, dragonman, etc.-these will be great to be done, thks a lot

DSTChuck: Hey Leondeluz glad you’re a fan. I think I’ve been over this in the past but maybe its been a while so it might be time to address it again. Marvel Select was not created to be a companion line to Marvel Legends. In fact we came up with the idea for MS before Marvel Legends was a line. At that time most Toy Biz figures were 5 inches not 6 inches. Part of our agreement also regulated the price we could charge for a figure, that combined with the rise of 7” figures in the collector market made the 7” scale an easy decision in our minds. Once ML caught on, yes there was of course some outcry for MS to become a companion line to ML: i.e., to do characters collectors thought would never be done in ML. That was not our intention; our intention was to give the specialty market a line of figures they could stock and not worry about big box retailers having and selling for less than they paid for it. We had many request from retailers for standard figures of the major Marvel heroes that they could stock on their shelves.

To address your question directly NO the ones you list are NOT all the best sellers we have done, in fact Watcher is one of the worst and Deadpool looks like he will be one of the best sellers. You are correct that some of the larger figures have done quite well and we will continue to do them as we can, but we have heard the reason many collectors buy them is the great vaule they present, though I am sure some buy them to go with their ML collection.

Hello DST as you may know, Deadpool is hot right now! I was wondering if we would see a re-release of the 90’s Deadpool. its in such high demand right now! its going from 60-70 bucks on the bay! its crazy! thanks!

DSTChuck: I am not sure which DP figure you mean but I can assure you we are working as hard as possible to get the MS Deadpool in stores as soon as possible.

Hey, I was wondering if you know if the upcoming Marvel Select Juggernaut will have traditional style ball jointed hips or the kind of faux-ball jointed hips like Abomination had? That Juggernaut might very well be my favorite figure, not just from Marvel Select, but from any company, and I would hate to see it marred with missing articulation.

DSTChuck: Yes I believe that is the intention. Some changes had to be made with the Abomination to compensate for the high cost and weight of the figure as we entered production. Also MS is strictly limited by contract to the number of points of articulation a figure may have.

James Sawyer
Hey! I’m a huge fan of your Wolverine figure! I think it’s probably the best action figure representation of the character ever made. Quick question- I noticed that the brown version of the figure has hips that are significantly different from the blue/yellow and first appearance versions. The brown version has very smooth outer hips, while the other versions have a spherical bulge on the outside top of the hip. In my opinion, the brown version of the hip is much nicer. Is there any chance that the second production run of the blue/ yellow version will have the same improved hip sculpt used on the brown version, or does it use the same hip as the first blue/ yellow version? I’d order another of the blue/ yellow to replace my first one if I knew it had the improved hip… Keep up the great work! can’t wait for Gambit!

DSTChuck: That’s a good question, I’d have to go back though the project logs to see why it was done differently. Sad to say though because of the cost of creating the master steel mold required to make an action figure, we would not be able to go back and cut new steel for a future production run.

Scott Adams
Will you be releasing the Obi-Wan Episode III Ultimate Quarter Scale figure? It’s not listed on the page that has the other figures from the series, including the Mos Eisley Han. I was curious if it’s coming soon, delayed etc. Thanks , Scott

DSTChuck: Sorry for the delay but both are in transit right now from Asia and there should be no further delays.

Bridget Ryan
Hello, I have noticed that there is not one, but two websites that have pictures of the blue glow in the dark Stay Puft bank with the happy face not the prototype you’ve posted with the angry face and on one site it is listed as a New York Comic Con exclusive…any truth to this and do you mind spilling the beans on when we can get this awesome variant!? Thank you.

DSTChuck: The GID blue Staypuft will be offered at NYCC this October and on the DST website after the show (if there is stock left) and it will have the angry face.
