Avengers Writer Zac Penn Warns New Avengers Movie Might Suck

Jay Cochran - June 25, 2009
Avengers movie writer Zac Penn said in a recent panel at Los Angeles Film Festival that the upcoming Avengers movie (2012) was going to be a challenge because he had to be able to tie-in so many different characters, "It's hard to make a good movie," he said. "We all have the best intentions, and it still might suck."

Originally when Zac was working on the last two X-Men movies he had wanted to bring other characters into the script, such as the Fantastic Four but was not able to for various and obvious reason which had frustrated him, but now that Marvel is itself producing movies as a company, Penn said, "It is a world of difference; it is a lot easier to do things like that, and they encourage it."

Penn will be meeting in the coming weeks with the writers of the Marvel movies that will proceed and tie-in to the Avengers such as Captain America and Thor so that they can put together a storyline that overlaps with the plotlines of those films.

"They're doing Captain American and Thor first, and then Avengers is coming out," Penn said. "They want to see that they're all connected, not like the Fantastic Four can't come into the X-Men world, like I was told. I'm taking a meeting next week with the Thor and Captain America people, and we are all going to get together, and I will see what is going to happen. I'll see where they are leaving the characters; it's pretty complicated. ... There's a board that is tracking what is happening. [We'll see] how this movie overlaps in that movie. ... Marvel is autonomous now. It is night and day: Everyone has read every comic. They know how to make a cool movie."

Yeah, some folks are taking this a wee bit out of context.

As for why the guy gets work? It's pretty simple...add up the box-office totals of that list of movies he's written for and you'll have several hundred million reasons he still gets work.

yeah Eldest son, I read it, and in his defense I will also add, at least he is honest.

How many times have you seen an actor/ director/ producer/ or writer proclaim their upcoming work to be a body of greatness!!!

i do feel that as someone who represents his trade I would say that it may "suck", but at lest he was honest and did not try to beat anyone over the head with delusions of grandeur.

Hopefully they will work the kinks out and this smoke screen will end up revealing a truly awesome flick, ESPECIALLY if they stick to the source material.

They haven't really even started on it yet have they? I think all he is saying is they are going to do their best, but it's quite possible it could still suck.

Yes, i think thats what he was saying that viewers and fans may still think the movie sucks, even if the creators do not.

lol, did any of you actually read what he said or did you just take it out of context?

when that avengers movie comes out, i wonder how much crappy figures are we gonna get form that.

BigBearJahlon - 2009-06-29 @ 2:54 pm

the problem with Zac Penn, and his track record is that I don't think he wrote the basic scripts for the movies entirely, and that still leaves room for the director to touch things up.

Now with that said, you can't throw out the possibility of a movie that you are just starting to work on as being weak. That makes him very unprofessional.

Marvel, please slap him!!!

There goes my Avengers movie and I had such high hopes for that. Why don't they get J. Michael Stracsynski, not only he's a great comic book writer, he has experience from working on Babylon 5
