First Look At Mickey Rourke As Whiplash In Iron Man 2

Jay Cochran - June 09, 2009
USAToday has revealed our first look at Mickey Rourke as the villian Whiplash in Paramount's upcoming Iron Man II movie.

Whiplash (Mickey Rourke) sports a power pack on his chest that looks similar to the one used by Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). "The technologies are definitely related, and that's part of the core theme of the film," says director Jon Favreau.

Mickey Rourke as Whiplash The character's alter ego, Ivan Vanko, is a Russian who, Favreau says, "has constructed his own version of a suit." Among the creative alterations: a pair of whips, powered by the suit's glowing chest piece, expected to keep Iron Man cracking. Whiplash "is going to light them up," says Rourke.

Damn, that's what happens when the film companies start taking too many liberties. They try to "modernize" everything. I agree they were trying to stay away from the whole Iron Man vs. Iron Man type character because that pretty much happened in the first film, but hell, there's quite a big stable of characters to chose from and WL is a B-lister at best. What they're doing is basically just yanking a new character straight out of their asses to appeal to the general public while still trying to appeal to the comic community by attaching familiar names to it. After his fantastic outing on the first film, it looks like Favreau's well on his way to becomming the next Bret Ratner.

And good riddance to Terrance Howard. No matter what his people say, he was out because he wanted too much money. That's what happens when idiot critics give mediocre actors too much acclaim for parts they played in crappy movies. They start to think they are the biggest part of every project. Don Cheadle's a much better actor anyways and he actually resembles Rhody more from the comics.

i think that the whiplash comic costume is out of date anyway for a movie. the only thing that bothers me is, that they are all oriented to the ironman suit with the light in the middle. thats a bit annoying. i mean will all the ironman villains use starks technology? wait and see how this turns out.

it's the first stage of is suit, hammer's going to get involve, and is going to whipelash\crimson dynemo combination, atleast that what i understood from what fverue said.

The movies do seem to take great liberties with almost all the characters, but that is to be expected if the film is meant for everyone and not just comic book fans. Besides, the Cold War is done, Crimson Dynamo won't get as strong a reaction as he would have twenty years ago. However, by combining two villains, they can take the best of both.

I am still pissed about Rhodey, though.

Despite lots of speculation, the studio always said Rourke was playing Whiplash. It looks like the character will be a melding of Whiplash and Crimson Dynamo, however. I think it makes sense...Whiplash as a character is well...lame. Crimson Dynamo has a silly name, and basically results in "Iron Man vs. Iron Man" fight. Whiplash/Dynamo hybrid gives us a credible threat for Iron Man with a somewhat unique "style" (with the whips) that can make for a more interesting fight scene.

I'm almost certain this is a "prototype" Whiplash. Just like the Iron Man Mk. 1. There's probably a more elaborate "Mk. II" or "Mk. III" later in the film.

And for those who might have forgotten: They seriously messed with Obadiah Stane's background and relationship to Tony for the first film.

I think they're going for a more grounded, real approach to the characters so his whip is gonna be powered by the same technology as the Iron Man suit. Hopefully this is a raw outfit and it's gonna be more elaborate later.

ShipwreckJr - 2009-06-10 @ 4:41 am

wait wait... what? CRIMSON DYNAMO is now... "whiplash"? can somebody honestly tell me i am mistaken? seriously...
